#3

As of right now, I consider my neighborhood to be the University. There is lots of racial and gender diversity on campus.

However, in some of the dorms and of course the fraternities and sororities, there is gender separation. I know these are coded to include only one gender because some of the residence halls are single gender, and of course the Greek houses are single gender.

I also think the LLC is “coded” to “specific” demographics. It’s not necessarily gender or race, except for WiSE, which is an all female program that is housed inside the LLC. In the LLC there are lots of divisions, based on what floor, wing, and program someone is part of. However, having all of these groups together diversifies the building. The people within a program definitely feel more comfortable interacting with others in the same program.

I feel that people feel “out of place” when they go into a building on campus they do not normally go in, or visit a dorm they do not live in. People get used to their routine, and when they visit some place they do not normally visit, they feel “out of place.” I know I feel “out of place” if I go into a building I’ve never been in because I’m new here. I like staying in the comfort zone of my routine: going to my classes, passing through Nye and Argenta to get to the Downunder CafĂ©, and the 4th Floor of the LLC.
