#4

The largest advertisements I see around campus (my neighborhood) are from the large university screen at the main entrance to the campus, just south of the Lawlor Events Center. The screen advertises upcoming events on campus, as well as for Kaplan University. I find the advertisements for Kaplan University odd, because one university is advertising another.

I see advertisements and flyers posted everywhere on campus, letting people know about numerous club meetings, special events, as well as advertising special pricing for college students for things from food to ski passes. The advertisements for free or reduced priced items get lots of attention, as a lot of students are on the “poor college student” budget. The notices for the upcoming home football game is always present, especially on the big screen just south of Lawlor.

There is definitely more advertising for the more popular sports teams than the less popular ones. This is unfortunate, because we should be advertising for all of our sports teams equally. Having participated in less popular sports in high school, I wish the less popular sports got a little bit more recognition. But I also realize that advertising for just the few really popular sports easily draws a large crowd, instead of advertising for a bunch of teams only to reach a few people each. I do agree with the advertisements for events on campus because I love being part of the active community so I appreciate being in the know. I also love learning about free stuff, I mean, who doesn’t?
